Individual studies exist for other languages, such as French (Kahane and Pietrandrea), Italian (Bonvino, Masini and Pietrandrea 2009), and Japanese (Barotto 2016). Yet, a systematic cross-linguistic survey of list constructions is still missing, even though the comparison of data from different languages reveals a high degree of both formal and functional variation (cf. Mauri 2016 concerning the cross-linguistic variation attested for ad hoc categorization lists).<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of questions that need to be addressed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do list constructions manifest themselves in different ways in languages characterized by different morphological systems, e.g. isolating vs. agglutinative morphology?<\/li>\n<li>How is listing realized at different syntactic levels across languages (e.g. non-exhaustive connectives, ex.1))?<\/li>\n<li>Are there recurrent diachronic patterns involving lists, e.g. the development of reduplication (examples 2), 3) and 4))?<\/li>\n<li>Are there recurrent diachronic patterns leading to specific list constructions and specific list markers (e.g. general extenders)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>1) Japanese (isolate; Kuno 1973: 115)<br \/>\n[<\/i><i>Biiru-<\/i><b><i>ya<\/i><\/b><b><i> \u00a0 <\/i><\/b><i>sake-o]<\/i>drinks<i>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/i><i>takusan<\/i><i>\u00a0 <\/i><i>nomimashita<\/i><i>.<\/i><br \/>\nbeer-and <b>\u00a0<\/b>sake-acc \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0lots \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 drank<br \/>\n\u2018[I] drank lots of beer and sake <b>and stuff like that<\/b>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>2) Turkish\u00a0(Altaic; G\u00f6ksel and Kerslake 2005: 91-92)<br \/>\n<i>Eve <\/i><i>\u00e7at<\/i> <i>kap\u0131<\/i> <i>bir<\/i> <i>al\u0131c\u0131<\/i> <i>geldi<\/i><i>, <\/i><b><i>odalar\u00ed<\/i><\/b> <b><i>modalar\u00ed<\/i><\/b> <i>dola\u015ft\u0131<\/i><i>.<\/i><br \/>\n\u2018Today a potential buyer came without notification, and looked at the <strong>rooms and such things<\/strong>\u2019<\/p>\n<p>3) Lao (Kam-Tai; Enfield 2007)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A V-N sequence is repeated, substituting the N in the repeated phrase with something semantically related \u00a0 (usually, a synonym or antonym):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>man2\u00a0 <\/i><i>paj\u00f8<\/i><i>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/i><b><i>s\u00f9\u00f94\u00a0 song5 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0s\u00f9\u00f94\u00a0 s\u00f9a4<\/i><\/b><br \/>\n3.B \u00a0 \u00a0 DIR.ABL\u00a0 <b>buy \u00a0 \u00a0trousers\u00a0 buy \u00a0 \u00a0shirt<\/b><br \/>\n\u2018He (went and) bought clothes (lit. trousers and shirt).\u2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A generic, default echo-formative strategy, where the complement element of the repeated phrase is substituted with the indefinite inanimate pronoun <i>\u00f1ang3<\/i> \u2018something, what, whatever\u2019:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>man2\u00a0 <\/i><i>paj\u00f8<\/i><i>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/i><b><i>s\u00f9\u00f94\u00a0 song5 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0s\u00f9\u00f94\u00a0 \u00f1ang3<\/i><\/b><br \/>\n3.B \u00a0 \u00a0 DIR.ABL\u00a0 <b>buy \u00a0 \u00a0trousers\u00a0 buy \u00a0 \u00a0INDEF.INAN<\/b><br \/>\n\u2018He (went and) bought trousers and so forth.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>4) Italian<br \/>\nB: perch\u00e9 ne ho bisogno perch\u00e9 siccome non guadagno tanto ho bisogno [<b>per comprarmi i mobili] [per <b>\u00a0comprarmi <\/b><b>le cose] <\/b><br \/>\n<\/b>A: ah hai trovato casa xyz (LIP Corpus, Roma B21)<br \/>\n&#8216;B: Because I need it, because since I don&#8217;t have a high salary I need (it) to buy myself <strong>furniture etcetera<\/strong> (lit.
