SUMMARY:Igor Vishnevetskiy\, "A Russian Romantic Poet and Theorist in Italy. The Forgotten Case of Stepan Shevyryov"
DESCRIPTION:Colleghi e studenti sono cordialmente invitati\nalla conferenza del Professor\n\nIgor Vishnevetskiy \nRussian State University for the Humanities\n\ndal titolo: \nA Russian Romantic Poet and Theorist in Italy.\nThe Forgotten Case of Stepan Shevyryov\n  \n  \nche si terrà il giorno lunedì \n19 maggio 2014 alle ore 16.00 (Aula Forti) \nDipartimento di Filologia Classica e Italianistica\n(Via Zamboni 32) \nThe presentation will discuss a brief yet important episode in the long and mutually rewarding history of Russian-Italian cultural exchange — the two and a half years\, which young Russian Romantic poet\, translator\, literary scholar\, and critic Stepan Shevyryov (1806—1864) spent in Italy between 1829 and 1832.  Shevyryov’s keen interest in Italy’s medieval past and modern present resulted in his own\, highly idiosyncratic project for Russian culture.  Based on what he had learned in Italy\, Shevyryov came forward with a set of ideas which combined awareness of one’s own cultural heritage\, longing for a new national epic\, keen interest in “Old Europe”’s Christian art\, strong anti-capitalist sentiment\, support of national revolution\, and rather paradoxical monarchism. Elements of this project will be traced through the uncensored versions of Shevyryov’s poems\, which he composed in Italy (some of them still await publication)\, his verse translations from Dante and Tasso\, the “Letters from Italy\,” which he published in various Russian periodicals\, and the lectures\, which Shevyryov delivered upon his return at the Moscow Imperial University.  Special attention will be paid to Shevyryov’s unusually detailed and perceptive essay on Bologna’s Pinacoteca\, which\, he believed\, could serve as a model for a future public art museum in Moscow.

SUMMARY:British Society for Literature and Science Conference 2013 - Call for Papers
DESCRIPTION:Cardiff University and the University of Glamorga \n \nThe British Society for Literature and Science invites proposals for papers and panels to be delivered at its eighth annual conference to be held in Cardiff\, 11-13 April 2013.\nThe BSLS Conference does not have a theme (as it its usual practise) but especially welcomes proposals on the state of the field of literature and science as well as its relation to other fields. This year we would be particularly interested to receive proposals that reflect upon the interdisciplinary study of literature and science in the context of the debate about the present position of the humanities in academia. However\, the Society remains committed to supporting proposals on all aspects of literature and science across all periods.\nProposals for papers of 15-20 minutes should be sent in the body of the email text (no attachments\, please)\, to bsls2013@yahoo.co.uk with the subject line ‘BSLS 2013 abstract’. Submissions should include the title of the paper\, an abstract of no more than 300 words\, a maximum of 3 keywords (placed at the end of the abstract)\, and the name and contact details of the speaker.\nClosing date for submissions: 7 December 2012.\n(Decisions will be made in January 2013)\nContributors interested in organising a panel or other special session\, or who have suggestions for alternative forms of conference presentation\, are warmly encouraged to contact the conference organisers. The organisers would welcome\, for example\, workshops on teaching literature and science\, or on specific themes in literature and science that cross period boundaries\, or on specific published works with considerable influence in the field. Please email the organisers on bsls2013@yahoo.co.uk\, using ‘BSLS 2013 Panel’ as the subject line in email correspondence. \nFunding: a bursary of £150 will be awarded to a graduate student on the basis on the paper proposals. The student must be registered for a masters or doctoral degree on 9 January 2013. The conference fee will be waived for two further graduate students in exchange for written reports on the conference\, to be published in the subsequent issue of the BSLS Newsletter. If you are interested in being selected for one of these places\, please mention this when sending in your proposal. \nAccommodation: please note that those attending will need to make their own arrangements for accommodation. Information on selected hotels will be available shortly on the conference website. As in previous years\, we anticipate that the conference will begin at about 1pm on the first day and conclude at about 2pm on the last. \nMembership: in order to attend the conference\, you must be a paid-up member of the BSLS for 2013. We anticipate that it will be possible to pay the £10 annual membership fee when paying the conference fee online. \nFURTHER INFORMATION\nVisit the conference website at: http://literatureandscience.research.glam.ac.uk/bsls2013/

SUMMARY:Oxford Romanticism Conference - The Romantic Medium: Language and Lexicon CFP
DESCRIPTION:University of Oxford \n \nCall for Papers \n“The lovely shapes and sounds intelligible / Of that eternal language\, which thy God / Utters”\n(Coleridge\, Frost at Midnight\, 59-61) \n“the reason why I dislike it is that it does not describe the feelings of a rhyming peasant strongly or\nlocally enough…” (John Clare\, manuscript marginalia 1821\, quoted in Alan Vardy\, John Clare Politics\nand Poetry\, Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan\, 2003: 31) \n“Through sad incompetence of human speech” (Wordsworth\, The Prelude (1850) 593) \nKEYNOTE SPEAKERS:\nStephen Gill (Lincoln College\, Oxford) \nMichael O’Neill (University of Durham) \nThe Oxford Romanticism Conference will seek to bring together academics and postgraduate students in a one-day event for discussion of the current study of ‘The Romantic Medium: Language and Lexicon’.The conference takes its lead from the Romantic Realignments Seminars held weekly in Oxford and will seek to reflect advances in the past decade of Romantic scholarship. Language is to be considered in a broad sense\, incorporating topics on genre to metaphor\, translation to soundscape\, through an awareness of the plurality of languages at play. \nThe Conference will be structured around three main branches of criticism—a historical approach to vocabulary and the nature of material text; theoretical approaches dealing with questions about the kind of medium language is and how it functions; and finally close readings exploring what Romantic writers were doing with language. The goal of the Conference is to unite what have historically been three separate critical approaches to the study of language in the period. We hope that in hosting this conference\, these approaches can be viewed side by side and we can begin to assess Romanticism from a broader and more unified perspective. \nParticularly welcome will be those papers considering the relationship between language and political and historical context\, the failure of language as a medium\, and how the tussle between primitive or vulgar and civilised or cultured language has characterised the new study of Romantic language.\nTopics may include but are not limited to: \n· Bibliography and/or Romantic vocabulary\n· Language as a medium\n· Metaphor\, allegory and rhetoric\n· Inadequacy of language an inarticulacy; need for language borrowed from other spheres\n· Post-Romantic (Victorian\, Modern\, Post-Modern) appreciation and usage of Romantic language\, including responses against Romanticism\n· ‘English Grammar’\n· High/low\, poetic/rustic\, primitive/cultured language and what these constitute \n· Classical and foreign influences on Romantic language \n· Purity/chastity of language \n· Musicality of language\n· Linguistic authority \nWe welcome also other interpretations of the Conference theme. \nOxford University invites submission of 200 word abstracts to be sent\, with name\, address and affiliation\,\nto oxfordromanticismconference@gmail.com. The deadline for submission is 15th December 2012.
